Advocate Kezhokhoto Savi today called upon student leaders not to compromise on people’s rights for the sake of development, citing instances of recent policies and steps being initiated by the government which are posing threats to Article 371(A) which grants special status for the state of Nagaland.

Savi, a former Tribunal General of the ANCSU and Assistant Professor at Kohima Law College, was exhorting a section of student leaders during the All Nagaland College Students' Union (ANCSU) programme for change of guard for the 2021-2023 tenure here at the NSF conference Hall.

Some of these instances, he recounted were the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Securities Interest Act, (SARFAESI Act) or Register of Indigenous Inhabitants (RIIN) which he said were directly posing threat to the ownership of the land and indigenous rights.

On this note, Savi, who is also NVCO President, asked the union to be aware of such threats that are going to affect people of the State in the long run. At the same time, he reminded them to pursue and take up issues in the general interest of the people.

While noting that society is plagued by trust deficit and corruption, Savi encouraged the student leaders to be lifelong students and keep continuing to remain curious on different subjects.

He added that whatever is pursued has to be done with utmost commitment considering one's job as a calling and a passion notwithstanding the hours of work. At the same time, Savi pointed out the need to inculcate a sense of giving and generosity. "Look upon it as accepting a challenge and responsibility and obligation to actually make it possible for people who are younger to come up and achieve levels of greatness so they too can be on the stage sometime in the future."

He further called upon them to display winning habits and lead in discipline at a personal and general level.

Outgoing President, Vimeyiekho Vitso described the current educational system to be at a transcending phase. While it is going from one system to another and from then to now, one needs to learn to adapt to changing times and situations, he said.

He said that a students’ platform needs to be keen on various interests which governs studentship, be it college or university guidelines, higher education programmes or scholarship.

The new President, Toito D Chishi assured to work with sincerity and commitment and to further retain the legacies of the past while continuing to address student interest issues.  Describing the outgoing team as dynamic, Chishi said several issues pertaining to the student community were addressed and a lot of achievements were also made.
