News report damaging to peace talks

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 19 (MExN): The Netherland based Naga International Support Center (NISC) has taken serious note of the news report published in the Indian Express newspaper on October 15, 2012 informing that that the NSCN (IM) had signed a written commitment to accept the Indian Constitution. A press note from the NISC has asked the Indian Express to come up with the written and signed document as proof. The NISC questioned as to what motivated that writer and why did the Indian Express allow it to be published and why did the Government of India not react.

“To defuse potential confusion the Government of India should denounce this report immediately and in strong terms”, the NISC stated while also urging that the GoI should prosecute the newspaper for defamation, slander and fabrication. “Because Indian Express reports on and quotes the Government of India, GOI should investigate who is responsible for this fabrication”.

Stating that this news damages the fragile peace talks, confuses the people (Indians and Nagas alike), the NISC pointed out that the Government of India should show Indian Express as well as the Indian press at large, that the freedom of the press does not include the freedom of telling lies with the purpose of destabilizing and defaming.

The NISC stated that if the GOI does not denounce and act upon the lies spread by Indian Express it would be submitting itself to “serious suspicion of providing the Indian Express journalist with details for the article and logically enhances the suspicion it is implicated in the concerted effort to destabilize the peace talks with the Government of Nagaland (not just Nagaland State but the Naga Nation)”.
