Maligaon, July 7 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has implemented a series of measures to ensure safe and uninterrupted train operations during the monsoon season, given the region's vulnerability to heavy rainfall, landslides, and flooding.
Stationary watchmen have been deployed at vulnerable locations to monitor track conditions round-the-clock and raise immediate alerts in case of any hazards, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer, NFR stated in a press release.
To mitigate risks, the NFR has reinforced washout-prone and flood-sensitive areas by strengthening embankments, improving drainage systems, and clearing natural water flow channels.
Additionally, water-level gauges have been installed at critical points, especially in hill sections, for real-time monitoring of rising water levels.
To ensure swift emergency response during the monsoon, NFR has pre-positioned relief materials including boulders, sandbags, and wire mesh at strategic locations.
Fully-equipped ‘Emergency on Wheels’ trains, staffed with technical personnel and essential tools, are on standby for rapid deployment. Additionally, Rapid Response Teams across all divisions to tackle monsoon-related disruptions like landslides, track washouts, and waterlogging with minimal delay. These teams are trained to restore operations swiftly, ensuring minimal impact on passenger and freight services.
NFR has strategically deployed 197 wagons loaded with boulders, quarry, dust, and shingle in Lumding Division. These include 144 wagons of boulders and 53 wagons of quarry material, stationed at key locations like Jagiroad, Khatkhati, Shokhuvi, Maibong, and Badarpur. Other divisions have also been equipped as per monsoon protocols: Tinsukia: 52 wagons, Rangiya: 36 wagons, Alipurduar: 20 wagons, Katihar: 40 wagons.
Additionally, rescue equipment such as winch crabs, jacks, tirfors, and tripods have been distributed across all divisions to ensure swift response during emergencies.
NFR has strengthened its monsoon preparedness by collaborating with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for real-time weather alerts. Round-the-clock railway control rooms are leveraging these forecasts to monitor situations and regulate train movements as needed. Passengers are urged to stay informed through official NFR communication channels and follow advisories. With pre-positioned relief materials, emergency trains, rapid response teams, and IMD coordination, NFR reaffirms its commitment to safety, operational efficiency, and passenger convenience during the monsoon season.
