Maligaon, July 10 (MExN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) detected 1,14,633 passengers travelling without tickets or with irregular tickets during June 2026, nearly 25% more than the 91,717 such cases recorded in the corresponding month last year, officials said on Friday.
The railway realised Rs 14.44 crore through fare and excess charges during the month, registering a nearly 59 per cent increase over the Rs 9.10 crore collected in June 2025.
Of the total detections, 81,744 passengers were found travelling without tickets, resulting in the recovery of Rs 11.85 crore in fare and excess charges. Another 32,889 passengers were detected travelling with irregular tickets, contributing Rs 2.59 crore in revenue.
In addition, NFR realised Rs 46.84 lakh through non-penalty cases during the month. Luggage checking also contributed to revenue generation by ensuring compliance with railway luggage booking rules.
Officials said the railway conducted 377 intensive ticket checking drives across the zone during June, compared with 349 drives in the same month last year.
Ticket checking staff covered 3,289 trains during the month against 2,217 trains checked in June 2025, reflecting enhanced vigilance and revenue protection measures.
The cumulative performance during the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year also showed significant improvement.
Between April and June 2026, NFR detected 3,35,040 cases of ticketless and irregular travel and realised Rs 39.56 crore through fare and excess charges, compared with 2,37,256 cases and Rs 22.78 crore during the corresponding period of 2025-26.
The railway also realised Rs 1.42 crore through non-penalty cases during the April-June period.
Officials attributed the improved performance to regular surprise inspections and special ticket checking drives carried out by the Commercial Department, ticket checking staff and field officials to curb ticketless and irregular travel.
NFR appealed to passengers to travel only with valid tickets, carry proper travel authority and book excess luggage in accordance with Railway rules to help ensure safe, transparent and comfortable travel while improving the efficiency and financial sustainability of railway operations.
