
Kohima, March 22 (MExN): The Department of Soil and Water Conservation today observed World Water Day in collaboration with Group for Environment Management and Services (GEMS), a Nagaland based NGO involved in environment and water issues, at the conference hall of the Directorate. The programme was held with a view to address water concerns with the theme ‘Wastewater’.
Imkongneken Ao, Director, Soil and Water Conservation spoke about taking action on water issues, UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2030 to improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe re-use globally.
He called for wastewater and its cycle to be carefully managed during every part of the water cycle: from fresh water abstraction, pre-treatment, distribution, use, collection and post-treatment, to the use of treated wastewater and its ultimate return to the environment, ready to be abstracted to start the cycle again.
The Director also advocated the participation of NGOs in water conservation, while expressing that the Department looks forward to working in collaboration with NGOs on the same.
Impa Longkumer, President, GEMS shared inputs and suggestions where NGOs and Department of Soil and Water Conservation can work together for the welfare of the people.
A documentary which highlighted the real water scenario and its challenges in the state of Nagaland was screened at the programme.
