NHIDCL condoles, vows remedial measures

Dimapur, July 5, (MExN):  The National Highway & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) today expressed condolences and regrets over the unfortunate rock slide tragedy that occurred on Tuesday and vowed to ascertain the reasons behind the incident and take remedial measures.

The rock slide caused by heavy downpour on Chümoukedima stretch of the National Highway 29 on July 4 claimed two lives and wounded three others, besides damaging some vehicles.

To ascertain the reasons behind the incident and a proper study of the landslides and geology of the area, NHIDCL is sending a Technical Team including experts for suggestions of remedial measures so that such incidents can be prevented in future, stated a press release from the agency.

According to the NHIDCL, the specific incident site lies within the "Pakala Pahar" stretch, spanning from km 123.840 to km 129.000.

During 2018-19, excavation work was carried out the  stretch, allowing vegetation to grow on the slope and  the NHIDCL had implemented various special slope protection measures, including Coir mat with hydroseeding, rock netting with 3D Steel Mesh, rock barriers, Vetiver grass plantation etc, it claimed.

The location of the incident has been stable since 2019-20 and the NHIDCL had undertaken slope protection work up to a height of 30-35 meters at certain points along the stretch, it said.

According to site reports, clearance of a muck slide at Km 124.500 was in progress, with vehicles waiting when the rock slide occurred, it informed.

The NHIDCL promptly responded, mobilising machinery (JCB, loader), manpower, and an ambulance within 15 minutes and immediate medical assistance was provided to those affected, it added.

Further, the agency said its primary responsibility always has been to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens and travellers and remains committed to preventing road accidents and ensuring the highest standards of safety on all NHs under its purview.
