A house belonging to commander of the NSCN (K)’s armed wing Niki Sumi was raided on October 24 in Dimapur today. A “press release” with no official attribution of source but purported to have been issued by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and circulating in social media, stated that raids were conducted at a few houses at Naharbari today. Cash amounting to over Rs. 27 lakhs, 12 mobile phones, 3 laptops, 1 hard disk and “33 incriminating documents” were reportedly confiscated during the search.
As per the “release,” the raids were in pursuance of an earlier incident dating to April 2017 when Niki Sumi’s wife and 4 others, including a minor, were apprehended by the Assam Rifles in Manipur’s Senapati district. Cash amounting to over Rs. 18 lakhs and “other incriminating items” were confiscated at the time. All five were subsequently released on bail while the cash and items seized were also released, the “release” said.
The case was later taken up by the NIA resulting in the raids at Naharbari today.
The police meanwhile said that there was no official information of the day’s raids. It was though added that the raids were conducted by the NIA and the subsequent seizure of currency.
