The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) exuded confidence of coming back despite the party’s winless show at the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly Elections.
NPCC General Secretary, Capt. GK Zhimomi said that the party will bounce back with the infusion of younger leaders. “Congress is not only a national political party but it is an idea that gave India its independence and will remain as long as India remains as a nation,” said Capt. Zhimomi when asked to comment on Congress’ performance.
According to him, “Majority of our voters have chosen to face another 5 years of miserable existence despite having experienced 15 years of total mis-governance and rampant corruption.” Stating this will have serious ramifications in the long run, he added that the same set of leaders have returned, who he alleged have “succeeded in coning the people” by rebranding “themselves into different party colours.”
Lun Tungnung, who lost to the NPF’s Azheto Zhimomi at 3 Dimapur III AC, blamed it on the use of money by the other winning parties, which induced the public. “Money and muscle power undermined the sanctity of democratic process, he said, while adding that “rampant proxy voting” was visible which rendered the clean election campaign a farce. He added that the Election Commission of India also overlooked this aspect.
The defeat notwithstanding, he said that it is “not the end for the Congress” and it will come back.
A retired bureaucrat and former ACAUT Advisor, KK Sema, who lost to the NPF’s Zhaleo Rio, asked to comment on the outcome of the 2018 NLA elections responded that corruption prevailed. “Corruption has won. Congress will continue to be the voice of the people against corruption. (The Congress) will fight for transparency and accountability in governance.”
NPCC president, K. Therie declined to make any comment.
