The Nagaland state agriculture department has nine departmental farms comprising three seed farms at Merapani, Tizit and Helipong and six demonstration farms are located at Pfutsero, Baghty, Tuensang, Sekruzu, Pungro and Jalukie for testing of newly introduced seed varieties in the state in order to have quality seed production.
This was stated in the annual administrative report 2017-18 of agriculture department tabled in the assembly session in March this year.
The report stated that these farms are manned by the department of agriculture established at different times in order to multiply quality and high yielding seed varieties particularly cereals, pulses, oilseeds and tuber crops and also to meet the seed requirements so as to boost up food grain production and productivity in the state.
Till 2013-14, this programme was funded under state plan but for the last several years there was no state plan for which these farms could not function as desired.
However, with the intervention of RKVY programme the farms are expected to meet the seed requirement of the department, the report stated.
The report added that quality seeds are also produce in these farms with the intervention of some other CSS programme like NMOOP especially oilseeds like soyabean, groundnut, mustard etc.
