Reacting to the controversy surrounding the death of a suspect involved in robbery and alleged sexual assault case on July 25, Director General of Police (DGP), Rupin Sharma termed the incident as unfortunate; however said the accused persons were involved in heinous crimes.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a programme at Chümoukedima Police Complex on Friday, the DGP explained that the case in question had two aspects. As publicly reported, the death of one of the accused persons during a ‘hot pursuit’ chase had been an accident as per the police investigations. “It was very unfortunate that it happened,” he commented.

However the first aspect that led to the incident was that of molestation, which is a “pretty serious incident is” he stated. During the course of investigation, the DGP revealed that Dimapur Police arrested around 10 suspects in connection with the case.  “We have found that the group and its associates of have been involved in at least five more incidents of that nature,” he said.

He reported that they were basically a gang which was operating and blackmailing people through taking nude photographs or with their clothes off. This was to entice victims into giving them money or valuables including gold chains etc, he said.

Some of the money transferred through G-pay has been traced back including valuables such as the gold chain recovered from the house of the relatives of the accused. “It was unfortunate but we cannot deny the fact that they were involved in heinous crimes,” the DGP maintained.

On whether the police have taken action on the death threat issued by NSCN-K (Khango) group to a Naga contractor, he said that “We have already registered a suo-moto case as per the FIR filed by the Angami Youth Organisation.” Further he assured that the police will conduct a thorough investigation and find out the individuals behind issuing those threats.

Moreover, shedding light on the progress of the investigation regarding the murder of the New Market Gaonbura on June 7, the DGP affirmed that they have made decent amount of progress. Without providing further details due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, he said “we know who the perpetrators are and we know who was responsible for issuing the orders of the killing.” So far five suspects have been arrested, he added.
