Niuland police chase death: WSYF demands impartial investigation

DIMAPUR, JULY 28 (MExN): The Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) has expressed outrage following the death of Ngukavi Yeptho, a resident of Tokugha Village under Niuland District. Yeptho was reportedly hit and run over by police personnel during an attempted arrest on July 25 in Kuhuboto.

The WSYF condemned the actions of the police, describing them as deeply disturbing and questioning the protocols and decision-making processes of the law enforcement department. The use of excessive and lethal force, they argued, is inexcusable and unjustifiable under any circumstances. This incident, the WSYF claimed in a press release, demonstrates a blatant disregard for human life and the principles of justice and due process.

Despite an existing FIR against the victim, the WSYF emphasized the legal principle of the presumption of innocence, which dictates that every accused individual is considered innocent until proven guilty. They stressed that every person is entitled to a fair trial and humane treatment, regardless of the accusations against them. The tragic outcome of this incident, they argued, highlights a catastrophic failure in upholding these fundamental rights and responsibilities.

The role of the police, according to the WSYF, is to protect and serve. Such actions, they believed, severely undermine public trust and confidence in law enforcement. The WSYF questioned why the local GBs (Gaon Burahs) and village administration, known for their cooperation, were not informed about the police operation.

In response to the incident, the WSYF has demanded a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation. They called for stringent action against the police personnel involved, as well as all others implicated, in accordance with the law. Additionally, the WSYF has called for solidarity, resistance, and non-cooperation with law enforcement agencies from all Western Sumis if fair, speedy, and impartial justice is not delivered.
