At the age of 30, NK Naga (Ngukavi) has made a name for himself by becoming the first Naga to be appointed as a playback singer in the Bollywood industry with his soulful voice and a unique ability to flawlessly sing in multiple languages.

NK Naga, a self-learned singer, was appointed by Find Studioz, Mumbai on January 2, 2021 as a playback singer for its next Bollywood movie project. The singer will start recordings with the Mumbai-based Film Production House by 2nd week of February.

NK Naga, who describes his musical style as “free style” and says it is an “everyday challenge,” sings in multiple languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Assamese, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Punjabi, Nepali, Kannada, Gujarati, Rajasthani, English, Spanish etc.

Speaking to The Morung Express, NK Naga said he started singing at the age of nine listening to the tracks of legendary singers Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi who he added were his inspirations. “I’ve never approached any music school so far. By dedicated listening, I got to learn singing by myself,” he said adding that for singing in other languages he got friends to assist him in translations.

Feeling excited to get the tag of a playback singer, NK Naga thanked God for who he is today adding “this was my dream from the last 21 years. I‘ll polish it every day so as to work with famous music directors and film directors.”

NK Naga, who once judged the Northeast Gospel Voice, believes that besides talent, hardwork and dedication were the things that led Bollywood to choose him to be a playback singer, amongst many other Naga singers. Having performed more than 600 shows, the newly appointed Bollywood playback singer wishes to collaborate with Vishal Dadlani, Neha Kakkar and Arijit Singh in the future. Some of his popular songs include ‘Bapu,’ ‘How’s the josh,’ ‘Humsafar,’ etc.

NK Naga encourages upcoming singers to polish their talent everyday and says, “many may mock you in times of struggle but remember God‘s plan and follow His plans then He will lead you to your destination.”

In his free time, the multilingual singer writes songs, composes and also watches videos of struggling stories of famous singers.

His message to the people during the COVID-19 pandemic: “COVID in one way is like a new world and a new normal so it‘s time to renew oneself and start focusing on one’s own profession”.
