No directions for the conduct of the Delimitation Process after 2026 have been received from the Election Commission of India, Nagaland Chief Minister and Minister-in-charge of Election, Neiphiu Rio, informed the Fifth Session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) on August 27.

In response to a starred question posed by NLA Member from Arkakong Assembly Constituency, Nuklutoshi, regarding the issue, the Minister-in-charge stated that the delimitation exercise in the four North-Eastern States of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur was deferred by the Government of India (GoI) via a notification dated February 8, 2008.

The order regarding Nagaland was rescinded by the GoI on February 28, 2020, and subsequently, the Union Government reconstituted the Delimitation Commission for these four States as well as the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir in a notification dated March 6, 2020.

However, via a notification dated March 3, 2023, the four North-Eastern states were removed from the purview of the Delimitation Commission, the CM’s reply added.

Census Exercise
In a supplementary question by Nuklutoshi regarding the conduct of the 2021 Census, the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister-in-charge of the Home Department stated that the GoI has not issued any notification for the conduct of the overdue 2021 Census.
Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the conduct of Census 2021 was postponed until further notice by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India on March 25, 2020, it added.
