No import of cement to Dimapur

Hardware traders seek DCs intervention on taxation

Dimapur, August 5 (MExN): The Hardware Merchants' Association Dimapur (HMAD) has written to the Dimapur Deputy Commissioner underscoring difficulties faced by cement traders in the commercial capital of Dimapur.

It also said that the association has resolved to put a ban on import of all kinds of cement into Dimapur until the authority and others concerned intervene and pay heed to the difficulties and grievances being faced by cement traders.

In its representation which was submitted on Wednesday, the association stated that the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways had revised the permissible safe axle weights of goods vehicles and the same is being strongly enforced in all states across the country including Assam. Under such circumstances, the cement merchants of Dimapur have been compelled adhere to the revised guidelines thereby reducing the volume of consignment (for example a ten wheeler lorry carrying a total of 700 bags per trip has been reduced to 400 bags per trip), it said.

However, “With the enforcement of new policy coupled with number of other factors which are prevalent in Dimapur especially in terms of various forms of donations and contributions, it has become impossible to operate cement trade in the commercial hub of the state,” the association pointed out. Hindrance in the cement trade in Dimapur does not affect the people of Dimapur alone but it adversely affects the entire state, it added.

In this connection, the association requested the DC’s intervention, asking him to apprise the Dimapur Municipal Council to consider the existing revised policy of the ministry and revise the toll-tax levied on the transporters.

Further, in the interest of all concerned, the association would like appeal to the authority to strictly enforce the permissible safe axle weights of goods which have been implemented in rest of the country, the representation stated.
