No such body exists: KU on ‘Konyak Angh Union’

DIMAPUR, MAY 8 (MExN): The Konyak Union (KU) has expressed appreciation for the initiative of the Nagaland GB Federation Peace Committee (NGBDPC) in organising a unified platform to address the Indo-Naga political issue. However, the union has raised concerns over the inclusion of the name "Konyak Angh Union Nagaland" as one of the organizing entities.

In a press release issued on May 8, the Konyak Union stated that while it supports the efforts for dialogue, it is compelled to address the confusion caused by the inclusion of a body it says does not exist.

“The Ahng institution (Kingship) is a time-honoured and independent traditional authority, exercising sovereign powers for the right cause without association to any union or organization,” the KU stated. It noted that the Ahngs (hereditary chiefs) operate independently and are not part of any collective body like the one named.

Due to concerns raised by the public and various organizations over the legitimacy of the said union, the KU convened a coordination meeting with all Ahngs of various villages on May 7 at the KU Conference Hall in Mon. “After detailed deliberation, it was unanimously confirmed that no organization exists under the title 'Konyak Angh Union Nagaland',” the statement clarified.

In light of this, the KU has urged the concerned organising committee to rectify the mention of the non-existent body to prevent further confusion.

The KU reiterated its support for peace efforts but stressed the importance of ensuring accuracy in representation.

It must be noted here that the NGBDPC had clarified that no firm date has been fixed for the event and the May 14 schedule that gained traction on social media was merely part of an internal, tentative discussion within the Committee and its associates.

Once the date is finalised, it will be officially announced through the print media for the information of all concerned, it added.
