The Election Commission of India recently announced the poll dates for the Rajya Sabha seat from Nagaland sparking speculations over who will fill the lone seat.

The election will be held on March 31 to fill the seat vacated by incumbent Member of Parliament KG Kenye, who will retire on April 2.

While most of it is still under conjecture, sources in the political circles dropped a few names including former MP K Asungba Sangtam and BJP National Vice President Dr M Chuba Ao.

Sangtam, who represented Nagaland in the 13th and 14th Lok Sabha was awarded the Padma Shri for his contributions in public affairs in 2009, while Dr Ao is currently the Chairperson of the Nagaland State Co-operative Marketing & Consumers’ Federation Ltd (MARCOFED), a post he assumed after the formation of the People’s Democratic Alliance government in 2018.

Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) President Chingwang Konyak’s name was also floated for some time but he was reportedly ‘not interested,’ as per sources.
