No Tax on medicines manufactured after Oct 2: NVCO

Dimapur, March 18 (MExN): If you are paying extra taxes for the medicines manufactured on or after October 2, 2006, then think again, you are supposed to pay only the maximum retail price (MRP) printed on the medicine, according to the Nagaland Voluntary Consumer Organisation (NVCO).

“Every consumer should know that we are to pay 4 percent as Central Sales Tax (CST) and 4 percent as Nagaland Sales Tax (NST-local tax) above the printed price on the medicine. The medicines which are manufacture(d) on or after 2nd October, 2006 will not charge percentage tax but the consumers are to pay only the printed price (MRP),” stated a press release received here from the NVCO.

However, the release stated that those medicines which are manufactured on or before October, 2006 are required to pay 8 percent tax that is four percent CST plus four percent NST above the printed price.

The release stated that this was made aware to the people during the recently held World Consumer Rights Day function held at Mokokchung Town Hall on March 15 last.

The release stated that the NVCO President Kezhokhoto Savi congratulated the Mokokchung District Voluntary Consumer Organisation (MDVCO) for checking and bringing down the excessively charged percentage to eight percent only on medicinal goods.

The release also stated that there was a complaint against the misuse of some schemes, such as the Annapurna, during the discussion hour conducted on the day. In this regard, the release stated that the NVCO, through the Civil Rights Information Centre, will print more information for public Distribution basing on Supreme Court order.

The release further stated the NVCO and the MDVCO will jointly submit a representation to the Nagaland Power Department on the poor power supply in the district. The release stated that the move comes in the wake of various complaints from public leaders – regarding the poor power supply – during the discussion hour and requested the consumer organisations to spearhead the fight for better power supply.

The NVCO press release was jointly issued by Mhashesel Savi, NVCO Secretary, and Executive Members of NVCO, Meren Jamir and Yanpothung.
