Chuchuyimlang, October 9 (MExN): The ‘Noble Deeds Day’ to mark the birthday of Natwar Thakkar, Founder of Nagaland Gandhi Ashram was observed on October 9 at Chuchuyimlang under Mokokchung district. The day is celebrated in honour of the selfless services rendered by Thakkar for the welfare of the less privileged people of Chuchuyimlang and surrounding villages in particular and Nagaland in general.

Thakkar established Nagaland Gandhi Ashram in 1955 at Chuchuyimlang and since then had been engaged in promoting peace, national and emotional integration and implementing various initiatives aimed at socio-economic development of the region through Gandhian ideals and principles. Thakkar breathed his last on October 7, 2018.

In recognition of the rich contributions made by Thakkar for the benefit of the rural masses of the village, Chuchuyimlang Village Council declared his birthday as the Noble Deeds Day. On this day, the citizens of the village in their individual capacity or as a collective voluntarily perform various charitable and noble acts which will benefit other individuals or communities.

This year, the Chuchuyimlang Kaketshir Telongjem (CKT/Chuchuyimlang Students’ Union) organised the third edition of the Noble Deeds Day comprising a number of public service and charitable works by the citizens and organisations within and outside the village. The day-long celebration later culminated at a public function held at the premises of Nagaland Gandhi Ashram.

CTK, President, Imlinok in a press release stated that some of the highlights of the function were poetry recitation (An ode to Nagaland’s Gandhi), special songs, exhortations and reminiscing the journey of Natwar Thakkar through an act presented by the students of National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Chuchuyimlang, complemented by screening of a documentary on the life and work of Natwar Thakkar.

The function was also marked with paying rich tributes to the leader by a host of important public and government functionaries including Dr Chubala Aier, Chief Medical Officer, Mokokchung, R Arenla Aier, Acting Principal, Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung, Limakumla, EAC, Chuchuyimlang, Dr Aotoshi, Managing Trustee, Nagaland Gandhi Ashram, Chuchuyimlang, Chairman and members of Chuchuyimlang Village Council, Church leaders and public at large.

Another feature was the special tribute to Thakkar through recitation by the entire assembled participants, one of his quotes which now form a part of CBSE academic curriculum and which reads as – “I do not want my house to be walled in all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible.”

An online painting and essay writing competition focussing of the life and works of Natwar Thakkar was also organised with the aim to generate awareness about the selfless services and various initiatives made by the great leader. Cash awards and certificates were distributed to the winners.
