The five day long North East NSS Festival 2026, which commenced at Kohima Science College, Jotsoma (KSCJ) on July 27 has brought together National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers from all eight Northeastern states under the theme “Viksit Bharat.”
Gracing the inaugural session at RCEMPA, Jotsoma, Nagaland’s school education advisor Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, called upon the NSS volunteers to uphold the ideals of selfless service, leadership and national integration.
Dr Yhome lauded the organisers for bringing together NSS volunteers from across the Northeast on a common platform to celebrate the spirit of service, cultural diversity and unity.
He said that despite its diverse languages and traditions, the region remains united by a shared commitment to serving humanity.
The NSS is Central Government sponsored programme falls under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.
Dr Yhome said that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India played a very important role in introducing NSS in academic institutions, who envisioned that the character of the country can be built through the movement of the students.
“Today, with this great legacy, we are also all proudly gathered here, to be part of this great nation building,” he said.
“It is also our obligation that we participate in nation-building,” Dr Yhome said
In 1969, under Dr. D.S. Kothari, the first NSS was floated, which also marked the 100th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Dr Yhome told the volunteers that they will represent the nation tomorrow in any professionals, be it scientists, engineers, politicians or technocrats.
Today, the nation can be built not only with our natural resources. It can be built through planning of how we want our future to be, he said and described the character of the human as the most important resources.
“For us to build a nation, for us to build our home state, we need great characters,” Dr. Yhome insisted.
‘Work towards the vision of Viksit Bharat’
D Carthigueane, Regional Director, NSS, North Eastern Region enlightened the activities of the NSS.
Describing North East NSS festival as a unique programme, he said that festival aim to improve the personality of the students, provide opportunity for the NSS volunteers to exhibit their talents, also to learn each other culture.
Dr Subenthung P Tsopoe, Programme Officer, NSS, KSCJ said “We are here to celebrate the spirit of unity, the spirit of selfless service, and the incredible diversity of the northeastern state of India.”
Though we have all come from different states, different tribes, different languages, different customs and traditions, yet we are all bound and united together by one purpose, that is to serve humanity with compassion and selflessness, which is the very essence of the National Service Scheme, Dr. Tsopoe said.
Let us all try to build a long-lasting friendship and let us all unite together and work towards the vision of Viksit Bharat, a nation that is developed, that is inclusive, that is innovative, environmentally conscious, and that is united, he added.
Ruokuovituo Zatsu, State NSS Officer, Nagaland, said that the five day festival will be marked by cultural exchange, quiz competition, technical session, sightseeing, cleanliness drive, etc.
He said that 300 NSS volunteers have registered for the festival.
Earlier, Dr Temjenwabang, Principal, KSCJ delivered welcome address while Kivipu Jimomi, Chaplain, CCP, KSCJ pronounced invocation.
NSS volunteer Elvina Khangshou presented a special number.
Kethosituo Sekhose, Director, Department of Youth Resources & Sports, Nagaland and several other dignitaries also present at the inaugural session.
Meanwhile, Roko Angami, OSD (Sports), Department of Youth Resources & Sports, Government of Nagaland will grace the valedictory programme on July 31.
The festival is organized by State NSS Cell Nagaland and hosted by Kohima Science College, Jotsoma in collaboration with Regional Directorate of NSS, Guwahati, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt of India.
