North East Olympic Games: Nagaland finish 5th with 42 medals

Kohima, October 31 (MExN): With 6 Gold , 9 Silver and 27 Bronze for an overall total of 42 medals, Nagaland finished 5th at the First North East Olympic Games held at the main Stadium, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal, Manipur from October 24 to 28.   Athletes from the eight northeastern states competed in 12 different disciplines at the five-day sporting event.   Altogether, 175 players comprising of 72 male, 67 Female including 7 Technical Officials, 6 Officials from the State sports Association as observers, 22 Coach & Managers represented the state Team, a DIPR report informed.   There were 12 various disciplines such as archery, athletics, badminton, football, judo, shooting, table tennis, weight lifting, taekwondo, karate, boxing and wushu.   Nagaland best performance was in the discipline of athletics with Tsuchoi T winning Gold both 5000 Meters and 10,000 M race category and Seluokuolie Kire taking Gold for Shot Put (Men). The other Gold medals were in Boxing - 60Kg (Men), Karate (Women), and Weight Lifting - 67 Kg (Men).   Individually, Tsuchoi was the best performer at the games with a total of 3 medals, with another Bronze in the Women’s 4×100M rally race.   Meanwhile, Manipur emerged as the overall champions securing a total of 159 medals including 80 Gold, 48 Silver and 31 Bronze medals at the Games. With 140 medals - 46 Gold, 53 Silver and 41 Bronze medals – Assam was in the second place while Arunachal Pradesh bagged the third with a total 76 medals in the Games with 18 Gold, 20 Silver and 38 Bronze medals.   Team Nagaland was led by CHEF-DE-Mission, Tali Jamir and Deputy CHEF-DE-Mission Er. Seyieevizo along with Secretary General Nagaland Olympic Association, T Meren Paul, according to the DIPR report,   Jamir on behalf of all the players acknowledged the Chief Minister & President of Nagaland Olympic Association, Neiphiu Rio for providing all necessary funds and support for the state contingent “thereby creating a platform for the young up-coming players to display their talents.” He also expressed gratitude to all the technical officials, observers and Director, IPR, Nagaland, Limawati Ao for the vast media coverage throughout the event.   The second edition of North-East Olympic Games will be held in Arunachal Pradesh in 2020, the report added.   The Chief Minister also congratulated all the participants and especially the Medal Winners, it added.
