Compulsory Hindi/MIL courses under DU
DIMAPUR, APRIL 3 (MExN): North East student’s organizations in Delhi have reiterated their concern against the Delhi University’s proposal to implement compulsory Hindi/MIL courses in the first year of the four year undergraduate courses. In an effort to further intensify their stand against the university’s proposal; the North East student organizations held a meeting on March 30 and resolved to “collectively fight” against this “imposition” by the Delhi University.
A press note from the Naga Student’s Union, Delhi informed that a committee has been formed with representatives from each of the student organizations. A joint memorandum was submitted to the Vice Chancellor of DU on April 3 by the Naga Student’s Union, Delhi; Manipur Student’s Union, Delhi; Meghalaya Student’s Union, Delhi; Sikkim Student’s Union, Delhi; Arunachal Student’s Union, Delhi; Tripura Student’s Union, Delhi; Delhi Mizo Zirlai Pawl and the All Assam Student’s Union.
The memorandum asserts that the proposed move by the university goes against the constitutional right of every Indian to quality education. It expresses concern that the said proposition would create alienation among the North East student community in Delhi. The memorandum further requested the Vice Chancellor to have a “Re-look at the proposed structure and work out a suitable option for those whose first language is not Hindi or any of the MIL.”
The student bodies also said that most students from the NE are not proficient in Hindi or any of the MIL’s. They added that this proposal would be “counterproductive” and would lead to North East student’s moving away from Delhi. While the memorandum expressed its regard for the constitutional mandate to promote Hindi and other languages, it questioned the manner in which this mandate is being implemented.
