The North-East Region is witnessing significant infrastructure development with huge improvement in railways, waterways and airways, said Moses Chalai, Secretary North East Council (NEC) under the Union Ministry of DONER.
With the opening of Matarbari Port deep sea port in Bangladesh by 2027, the NE region would be opened to the world for economic activities and said that Nagaland should take advantage it, he added addressing the inauguration of the Bamboo-Based Craft Concentration Centre at Heirloom Naga Centre, Sovima on November 21.
The centre has been implemented by the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Centre (NECBDC) and Sustainable Livelihood Multipurpose Cooperative Society, Dimapur and funded by NEC, under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
Chalai further informed that there are 17 airports are operating in the NE at present, with around 200 flight operations. He also mentioned the significant growth in the banking, health and power sector
Despite such development, the NEC Secretary lamented that the income and job generation is not happening as it should, and that the youths are going outside seeking for jobs.
NECBDC Managing Director MC Omi Ningshen also shared on livelihood projects in the NE such as sustainable livelihoods and cooperative societies etc.
He said that the council is looking for partnership in artisans who are really committed to their work and assured their full support.
Accordingly, Ningshen urged both stakeholders and the government to back the goal of positioning bamboo as a key strategy for Nagaland, leveraging its rich traditional craftsmanship and abundant availability.
