Doc arrested from MLA’s house

GUWAHATI, APRIL 14 (AGENCIES):
The Paltanbazar police have arrested a prominent doctor in Guwahati charging him with assaulting his wife on Monday. Identified as Dr Prakitish Bora, the veteran pediatric was arrested from the residence of his father law Capt Robin Bordoloi who represents East Guwahati in the Assam Legislative Assembly. Sources told Assam Times that Dr Bora was assaulted during his alleged detention inside the house of Bordoloi alleging torture on his wife Ashima Bordoloi who happens to be the daughter of the legislator. Later police arrested Dr Bora on basis of the complaint field by Ashima Bordoloi who is the deputy mayor of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation.

12 CISF persons injured in road accident

HAFLONG, APRIL 14 (PTI):
Twelve CISF personnel were today critically injured in an accident when their vehicle collided with a dumper truck in Dima Hasao district, police said. A team of CISF personnel was travelling in their utility vehicle, which collided with a dumper head on at a remote area under Harangajao police station, they said. The 12 critically jawans have been referred to Gauhati Medical College Hospital while others were being treated at Haflong Civil Hospital, they said.

Petroleum plant opens in Arunachal

GUWAHATI, APRIL 14 (TNN):
A large petroleum installation with tankers and other state-of-the-art facilities was inaugurated in Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday. The project is a joint venture between Bharat Petroleum and the Army. Chief managing director of Bharat Petroleum S Vardarajan inaugurated the plant in the presence of commander of Army Eastern Command, Lt Gen MMS Rai and other dignitaries. The plant was built at an estimated cost of Rs 8 crore and will serve the remote areas of the northeast.

2 killed in clash over land dispute

GUWAHATI, APRIL 14 (AGENCIES):
Two persons were killed and five others have been critically injured when two groups of people clashed with each other in Nagaon district on Monday. The incident took place in Bokulguri area where both the groups clashed over a plot of land. The situation was brought under control after policemen had arrived in the spot. Two persons died on the spot while the five critically injured persons including two women are undergoing treatment at Jamunamukh Hospital. Police investigation is going on.

NDFB-S militant killed in Majbat

GUWAHATI, APRIL 14 (AGENCIES):
A hardcore NDFB-S militant was killed at an encounter with army in Udalguri district on Monday. The encounter took place at Mitunmai area in Majbat in the morning. Acting on a tip off that a group of NDFB-S militants are camping in the area, police and army conducted a raid where the encounter took place. Identified as Mustak Khan Mooshahary, the Bodo militant died on the spot. Notably, a section of NDFB-S militants has been unleashing terror in the area in the form of kidnapping, extortion and killing.

More new BOPs on Indo-Bangla border

Agartala, April 14 (PTI):
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will set up 81 new composite Border Outposts (BOPs) along the 856 km long Indo-Bangla border in Tripura by 2017 in addition to the existing 245 BOPs, BSF sources said today. The BOPs would have electronic surveillance equipment, communications and helipads besides living rooms for the men as also generators, the sources said. BSF said 80 per cent of the border fencing was complete and the remaining 20 per cent could not be completed due to tough terrain and large populations near the border. Border fencing was constructed 150 yards away from the demarcation line in adherence to Border management agreement signed between Bangladesh and India in 1974. The Ministry of External Affairs has taken up the matter with Bangladesh for allowing erection of fencing near the zero line in view of the difficult situation.
 
Gogoi says ‘no’ to diktat on Hindi

GUWAHATI, APRIL 14 (AGENCIES):
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said on Monday that art and culture cannot be confined to a particular state or area as Assam is proud of its unity in diversity. Talking to reporters in the sidelines of a bihu function at Latasheel Playground in the morning, Gogoi said that the performers have every right to perform in any language in the bihu functions. “Nobody can stop them from performing even Hindi songs. Accordingly, no performer will abide by a diktat if somebody passes,” said the chief minister before hoisting the flag of the festival. Gogoi’s comment assumed significant three days after ULFA-I asked the artists not to perform Hindi songs in the bihu functions.
