DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 4 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) joined in the “Nationwide Protest” expressing outrage in connection to an incident in Uttar Pradesh in which an effigy of Mahatma Gandhi was allegedly desecrated on January 30.
The NPCC’s Communication Department, in a press statement, condemned the alleged act of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) as “abominable.” The statement said that the ABHM “reenacted the killing of Mahatma Gandhi on his 71st death anniversary by shooting at his effigy that was later burnt down.”
It further said that the group during the enactment glorified Gandhi’s assassin by garlanding the statue of the assassin – Nathruram Godse.
At a protest function held at the District Congress Committee office in Dimapur, the statement said that the Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary Capt GK Zhimomi spoke of how the ideas of Gandhi have shaped India “while RSS and its frontals continue to harbor immense hatred towards the Father of the Nation.”
Despite, he held that the ABHM’s act has only made the image of Gandhi all the more relevant.
NPCC President K. Therie, in his speech maintained that Gandhi was assassinated because he stood by secularism and peace, the release said. “It was because Gandhi propounded these secular ideas that he was deeply hated leading to his assassination by Nathuram Godse.”
“The NPCC wants to send a strong signal to the people and the nation that we do not accept Hindutva or its proponents and condemn the insane act of shooting and burning of Mahatma Gandhiji’s effigy.”
