NPCC says Nagaland heading for anarchy, demands Prez Rule

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 1 (MExN): In the backdrop of what was described as the “ugly incident of inter-tribal clash” that occurred in Dimapur on September 1, 2012, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has pointed out that Nagaland State under the DAN government was heading for anarchy and that law and order has totally collapsed.

In this regard, the NPCC demanded from the Governor of Nagaland to take cognizance of the failures of the DAN government and impose President’s rule to restore normalcy and confidence of the people. “What more valid and solid ground is needed to sack the DAN government than the present situation?” stated a press note issued by the NPCC.

The NPCC termed the incident as “unfortunate and shameful” while pointing out that at a time when the people of Nagaland have been longing for peace and amity among us, the incident came as a rude shock. “The NPCC appeals to all the communities for restrain. Violence has no place in a civilized society”.

The Opposition Congress stated that what had triggered the incident was not far to seek. In this regard, the NPCC stated that Neiphiu Rio, the Chief Minister of Nagaland had earlier “outsourced the maintenance of law and order and illegal taxation in the State capital to a Non-government organization and that too, to a section of his own community”.

The NPCC claimed that the provisions in the “policy of community policing was thoroughly exploited and misused”. “In other words, he had given them the license to take law into their own hands. He had given the authority of handling law and order to an agency that is directly not accountable to the people of the State. It was a reckless decision”, the NPCC claimed.

It stated that the incidents were “entirely preventable had he not shifted the government’s responsibility and duty to a non-government agency”.

“That, he had failed to sense such eventuality amply proved his total incompetence”, the press note further stated.

The Congress also went on to state that the Chief Minster “has no faith in the State administration and law enforcement agencies” and that in all his public speeches and resolutions, he had given “undue weightage to the civil societies who have no roles in governance”. “Yesterday’s incident was the direct outcome of relegating the powers of the government”.

Stating that the Chief Minister of Nagaland was entirely responsible for the breakdown of law and order, the NPCC stated that “he had embarrassed his entire community” and that “even without been demanded, he should have stepped down on moral ground”.
