NPF extends Republic Day greetings, condemns attack on Pastor in Odisha

KOHIMA, JANUARY 25 (MExN): The Naga People’s Front (NPF) has extended greetings to the Naga people and citizens of India on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day, while reaffirming its commitment to democracy and raising concern over what it described as atrocities against minority Christian communities.

In a statement issued by its Press Bureau, the NPF said it “extends warm greetings to the Naga people and citizens of India on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day” and added, “We reaffirm our commitment to India's democracy while advocating for the rights and aspirations of the Naga people.”

The party acknowledged India’s diversity and constitutional values, stating that it “acknowledges India's rich cultural heritage and diversity, and we believe in working together towards a harmonious and prosperous nation.” It further said, “We recognize the importance of democracy, equality, and justice as enshrined in the Indian Constitution.”

However, the NPF expressed serious concern over a recent incident in Odisha involving a Pastor. “The NPF is deeply disturbed by the recent attack on a Pastor in Odisha, a stark reminder of the ongoing atrocities faced by minority Christian communities in India,” the statement said.

Referring to India’s constitutional character, the party stated, “As a secular state, India is expected to uphold tolerance and respect for all religions, but these incidents shame our nation's values.”

Condemning the incident, the NPF said, “We strongly condemn the brutal act of forcing a Pastor to eat cow dung and chant religious slogans, a grave violation of human dignity and constitutional rights.” It added that “Such attacks harm individuals and tarnish India's diverse cultural and social fabric.”

The party urged official intervention, stating that it “urges the concerned authorities to take immediate and bold steps to ensure justice and protect minority communities.”
