Accuses PDA of offering Rs 10 Crore reward to constituency unit with best percentage of votes for consensus candidate
DIMAPUR, MAY 20 (MExN): The Naga People’s Front (NPF) Mokokchung Division has taken exception to statements reportedly made by Minister of Urban Development, Metsubo Jamir while campaigning for the NDPP candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha election, Tokheho Yepthomi.
“It has been widely reported that, whichever constituency units scores the best percentage of votes in favour of NDPP candidate will be rewarded with an amount of Rs. 10 crores. He has stated this statement on several occasions so as to lure the electorates to vote for the NDPP candidate,” a press note from the NPF Mokokchung division media cell alleged.
It further claimed that the Minister had stated that the “PDA Government would reward these constituency unit electorates with the best performance of percentage.”
In view of these alleged statements, the NPF Mokokchung division sough a clarification from the Minister. It questioned “from which fund would the PDA Government reward (i.e. Rs 10 Crores) the village/ constituency electorates for voting in favour of the NDPP candidate?”
The NPF Mokokchung division further queried whether it is permissible to campaign with promises to reward electorates under the Election Code of Conduct.
“If it is not Government’s money then from which source will such a huge amount be awarded? Is it not an open violation of Election model code of conduct?” the NPF unit further asked.
It meanwhile asked the Election Commission of India to look into this “serious breach of the Election code of Conduct.”
