NPF for poll date change

Dimapur, April 2 (MExN):  The Naga People’s Front (NPF) has requested the Election Commission of India to reschedule the polling date for 26-Aonglenden assembly constituency, in Mokokchung district. The NPF said holding activities on a Sunday ‘is unthinkable’ and would undermine the Christian faith of the Christians in the state. The constituency is scheduled for bypolls on May 8.
In a letter addressed to ECI Secretary Virender Kumar, the Secretary General of NPF, KG Kenye, said the date of polling falls on a Sunday. Sunday is Sabbath and sacred to the Christian community all over the world. Nagaland being a Christian state, she also observes Sabbath days in prayer and services throughout the day, the NPF stated.
“As such, it is unthinkable to carry out a mass-based programme involving the entire population on such a day. It also amounts to undermining the Christian faith,” the NPF said.
“Therefore, it is the fervent appeal of the Naga People’s Front party to kindly reconsider the date and defer it by preponing or postponing the proposed day of the polling. The NPF hope the election commission of India will be understanding towards this proposal,” the party added in its letter.
