The Naga People’s Front (NPF) has rejected the appointment of retired Principal District and Sessions Judge, and ex-candidate of NDPP, Mayang Lima, as the State Vigilance Commissioner.

Addressing media persons at NPF central office here today, NPF spokesperson Achumbemo Kikon reminded the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) government that the Vigilance Commissioner is not a political post but a statutory post, which needs consultation from the opposition leader for appointment, which was not done, and therefore demanded revocation of the appointment immediately.

Expressing that the High Court has ordered CBI enquiry into the construction of a new High Court building in Meriema, he said Mayang had been a registrar of High Court. Given the position, the alleged scam should be investigated before making this appointment.

He also questioned the wisdom of the Governor of Nagaland for clearing the file and said Lima's appointment is an insult to Naga intellectuals.

Rights & defeat

Kikon stated that the NPF strongly opposes the Citizenship Amendment Bill proposed by the Centre.

Once the bill is passed, he predicted, Central government will not hesitate to push immigrants to North East. Nagaland being a vulnerable State, the party cannot accept the bill, he asserted.

Kikon also questioned the silence of the Governor and Chief Minister of the State noting that NSF protested against the bill but the Governor and CM did not react.

Accepting defeat in the just concluded bye-election to the sole Lok Sabha seat from the State, Kikon recalled that in the February State Assembly election, NPF polled 3,89,912, but in the recent Lok Sabha bye-poll, it got 4,20,459 votes, an increase of 30,547 votes.

“We are down but not out yet and we are not going to give up,” the NPF spokesperson stated.

Further, he said the past history of the Lok Sabha polls in Nagaland show the winning margin to be over 4 lakh, but NPF has created history by bringing down the margin to just one lakh. As opposition, this is a morale booster for the NPF party, Kikon maintained.

The NPF spokesperson cast aspersion on the reported huge turn out during the bye-election saying the State Assembly election witnessed a turnout of 84.27% despite the long queues in the polling stations but the State witnessed higher voting percentage at 86.73% in the Lok Sabha bye-poll.

“If not for proxy voting exercised by the supporters of NDPP candidate how could such an increase happen,” he wondered, while declaring that NPF has evidences of supporters of PDA candidate capturing booths.
