DIMAPUR, AUGUST 29 (MExN): The NPP Nagaland State has condemned the alleged custodial death of one Henveih Phom who was arrested and taken to Sibsagar Jail; and questioned the Nagaland State Government’s silence on the case.
“It is understood that Late Henveih Phom was arrested from within Anaki Village jurisdiction without the consent or intimation to the Mokokchung District authorities including the Mokokchung Police. It has also been learnt from credible sources that Late Henveih Phom was in good health and sound mind at the time of his arrest,” a press release from the NPP Nagaland stated.
It stated that such “cold blooded killing of a Naga civilian by the Assam Police cannot be and will not be tolerated at any cost.” It termed the incident as tantamount to gross violation of human rights and deserves unequivocal condemnation from all corners.
The NPP demanded that the government authorities including the State Governments of Assam and Nagaland immediately bring to book everyone responsible for this barbarous and villainous act. “We also request the concerned authorities to give befitting and the most stringent punishment to the offenders at the earliest so that such heinous and cowardly acts of violence by men in uniform are not repeated anytime in the future,” it added.
The party meanwhile questioned the Nagaland State Government as to why it has been maintaining a surprising silence over this serious issue and why this matter has not been discussed at the Chief Minister’s level till date.
It meanwhile offered condolence to the bereaved family members and relatives, and asked that the Central and State Governments of Assam and Nagaland immediately compensate the family members of the deceased with adequate ex-gratia.
