Nagaland Police Retired Officers Association (NPROA) celebrated its 10th anniversary on October 25 with an event held at the Central Police Officer’s mess, Chümoukedima.

Formed in the year 2014, the association was first formed with support from the Nagaland Police Service Association under the theme, ‘A trip down memory lane.’

Speaking as special guest for the occasion, Kevithuto Sophie, Commissioner of Police (CP), Dimapur congratulated the association on reaching their first milestone. He also appreciated the members whom he had the privilege to serve. Sharing on his own personal experiences, the CP mentioned that he has also completed 30 years of service now.

He observed the changing law and order scenario of the State from when he first joined service in 1994 or prior, up to today where it has become more or less peaceful. “Those days with factional killings being rampant, there were times when one would not go back home for days on end due to the restless situation,” he said.

But now, “Times have changed,” he recalled and went on to state that now ‘National workers’ have relegated themselves to operating an ‘extortion industry.’  “Nevertheless, we are trying our best to quell the situation,” he added.

Sophie noted that field experience plays an important role in shaping an officer’s career more than their educational qualification. Based on his own encounters, the CP said the sharing of advice and guidance from senior officers has personally helped him as well.

Further he encouraged the NPROA members to continue to be active members of society, through making meaningful contributions through their own capacity. In this, he suggested to the association of setting up a rehabilitation centre for alcoholics or drug addicts. “We can be very good councilors through our own lived experiences,” he said.

President of NPROA, NS Rengma, meanwhile, in his opening address mentioned that the main intention of celebrating their tenth anniversary was to keep in mind senior members within the association who might not live to see the twenty-fifth anniversary.

The occasion had in attendance members from Assam and West Bengal who had previously served in the Nagaland police. It was mentioned that members from Manipur were unable to attend the function due to the law and order situation in their state.

The programme was led by BB Rai, Vice President of NPROA while the General Secretary and Treasurer reports were delivered by GB Rongmei and Lungaini Rongmei respectively. Vote of thanks was read by Nuklutoba Ao, Vice President.
