NEW DELHI, DEC 19 (PTI): Ahead of the proposed talks with Naga insurgent outfit NSCN (IM), government said that it has received reports of extortion by underground groups in the Northeast.
“There are reports of extortion by underground groups including NSCN (IM),” Minister of State for Home S Regupathy told Lok Sabha in a written reply.
He also said there were some reports that NSCN (IM) has been recruiting fresh cadres. However, he maintained that there was no firm data in this regard.
The government has taken a number of steps to check extortion including payment of salaries by cheques, improving security and safety of national highways and major roads and strengthening presence of security forces in key towns.
