NSCN-K (Angmai-Mulatonu) condemns killing of two cadres in Changlang

Dimapur, May 12 (MExN): The NSCN-K (Angmai-Mulatonu) has strongly condemned the killing of two of its cadres at Doimuk Nala area under Miao Circle in Changlang district on May 11.

In a press statement issued by its Ministry of Information and Publicity, the group alleged they were killed during “intense and unprovoked firing” by the 8th Assam Rifles.

The NSCN-K (Angmai-Mulatonu) identified the deceased as Lt Col Umkong from Nayang village under Tangshang Region and Sgt Enu from Chithok village under Leinong Region.

As per the statement, the incident occurred when a Naga Army unit under its Pangsau Pass Command Group was on duty to maintain peace mobilisation and revive the Stilwell International Highway for the benefit of the people residing in the area.

The NSCN-K (Angmai-Mulatonu) termed the incident “irresponsible and provocative,” particularly at a time when it said its commitment to maintaining peace and restraint had been made abundantly clear.

Such actions are not only deeply regrettable but also threaten to destabilise the fragile peace and mutual understanding that has been carefully sustained with great patience and responsibility, it stated.

To this end, the group called upon the concerned authorities to immediately clarify whether the 8th Assam Rifles acted unilaterally or under the direction of the Government of India.

It further urged the authorities to ensure that such “tragic and avoidable confrontations” are not repeated.

Lasting peace can only be built through mutual respect, responsible conduct, and an unwavering commitment to dialogue, not through actions that inflict pain and further alienate communities, it added.

Meanwhile, the NSCN-K (Angmai-Mulatonu) stated that the untimely deaths of the two cadres represent not only an irreparable loss to their families and comrades, but also a “painful reminder of the continuing suffering and sacrifices endured by the Naga people.”

It further extended condolences and prayers to the bereaved families, while expressing solidarity with them in this hour of profound grief.
