NSCW condemns attack on journalist

Dimapur, February 27 (MExN): The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) has expressed “extreme distress” at the harassment meted out to a journalist at the re-poll at 36 Toshiho under 5-Ghaspani-II A/C on February 26. The journalist is a young woman who works for the Nagaland Post; she was physically and verbally abused by a mob while covering the said re-polls. Through a press release from its Chairperson, Dr. Temsula Ao, the Commission also lauded the courage of the journalist for bringing the incident out into the public domain.

Terming the incident “deplorable” and asking all “right-thinking Nagas” to condemn the act, Dr. Ao stated that this shows the “antagonism that still persists against women when they venture out in public in connection with their professional obligations”.

The NSCW has condemned the incident in the strongest terms and appealed to authorities, both at the village and state level to take appropriate action against the perpetrators of the “offensive behavior”. Timely action by the authorities, it stated, “will go a long way in curbing negative attitudes towards women’s empowerment and development in all spheres of Naga life”.
