Wokha, May 18 (MExN): The Nagaland State Commission for Women in association with the National Commission for Women, New Delhi organised a legal awareness programme on May 17 at Town Hall, Wokha.
According to a press release, Dr Temsula Ao, in her introductory speech, highlighted the purpose of the programme and stated that 'Human Trafficking' and 'Missing Person' were unheard of. This, she noted, was because parents were unwilling to participate due to ignorance. As a result, some agents take advantage and easily recruit groups of minor to be sold off elsewhere as forced labour or into prostitution, she maintained.
Dwelling on tackling Human Trafficking, she said that such activities cannot be handled by traditional customary laws because such diverse forms can only be dealt by law enforcing agencies, with proper networking of the Police, Labour Department and the NGOs. “Only then Human Trafficking can be prevented,” she maintained. The role of the Church could be significant as even the parents of victims need counselling, she added.
Others who spoke at the programme included Chumrenthung Lotha, S.P. Wokha, and Limasenla Longkumer, Legal Aid Counsel, NSLSA.
The programme was chaired by Asangla Cholong, Member NSCW, and Abemo Jungio, Associate Pastor Wokha Town Baptist Church invoked God's blessing. Mhonchumi Humtsoe, President Lotha Eloe Hoho, delivered the welcome address.
