Dimapur, May 6 (MExN): Twenty-five youth volunteers in Dimapur along with along with DNSU executives have begun specialised training in fire safety, disaster preparedness, and relief camp management under a two-day orientation programme jointly organised by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU).
According to a press release issued by DNSU, the programme on Fire Safety Preparedness and Relief Camp Planning for Dimapur began on May 6 at the Development Association of Nagaland office at Chekiye and will continue till May 7.
The orientation is aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and response mechanisms in Dimapur by building a pool of trained volunteers capable of assisting authorities and communities during emergencies.
Addressing the participants, DNSU Vice President R Micheal Yanthan highlighted the importance of unity and inclusiveness in disaster response, noting that the volunteers represented diverse tribes and communities.
He stressed that disasters do not discriminate, and preparedness must be a collective responsibility.
Yanthan also expressed appreciation to NSDMA for initiating what he termed as a timely and important training.
Dr. Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer, NSDMA presented a comprehensive overview on fire safety preparedness and relief camp planning and also highlighted the objectives and expected outcomes of the initiative.
Participants were oriented on key concepts such as hazard, risk, and vulnerability assessment during various sessions held throughout the day, providing a foundational understanding essential for disaster management.
In a session on the Basic Concept of Disaster Management, Rendemo Shitio, Assistant Manager, Response & Communication, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, shared practical insights on emergency response and communication strategies.
A Transect Walk Theory and Practical session by Thejangulie Zao, Assistant Manager, Projects & Resources, NSDMA also provided participants with hands-on field assessment training.
Another session on non-structural mitigation measures for urban flood risks in Nagaland focused on preventive approaches in urban settings.
Day I concluded with a session on relief camp management and operations led by L Jonjibemo Odyuo, Assistant Manager, Relief, Recovery & Mitigation, NSDMA, focusing on essential skills for effective camp coordination during emergencies.
Earlier, the programme began with registration and an introductory session led by Vekuzo Lohe, Project Associate, NSDMA.
The training will continue on the second day with additional practical sessions and capacity building activities, the release stated.
