NSRLM reaches out to help villages in Bhandari

Social Action Committees formed by various SHGs and VLOs under NSRLM-RD, Bhandari Block, Wokha district has launched a campaign to distribute essential items.
 

DIMAPUR, MAY 3 (MExN): Social Action Committees formed by various SHGs and VLOs under NSRLM-RD, Bhandari Block, Wokha district has launched a campaign to distribute essential items. 


Those involved, through their own earnings and personal savings, are catering to vulnerable groups at villages in their area.

 
A press release informed that till date, the group has provided essential items such as face masks, hand sanitisers, as well as food items such as rice, sugar, eggs, salt, mustard oil, milk powder, wheat flour, dal, fish, pork meat, lamb meat, Dettol soaps to over 150 households. 


Altogether, over 400 village households have been the recipients of their altruistic and benevolent initiative.  The NSRLM-VLO social action committees that were present or engaged in the distribution of the essential items include AWWs, ASHA workers, VLO presidents, VF cum MBK , community cadres, and SHGs members.


Besides rendering yeoman services, the Social Action Committees were also instrumental in other community services such as in the dissemination and sensitisation of IEC materials on COVID-19 through social media platforms, text messages and telephonic conversations. 


In addition to this, they played a pivotal role in the installation of indigenous bamboo poles for hand-wash, in providing firewood, fresh fruits and vegetables for the police personnel on duty in the villages, in the production of homemade face-masks, setting up and disinfecting community based quarantine centres, demonstration of clean hand-wash by ASHA and Anganwadi workers. Clean and Hygienic habits were also inculcated into places of worship as well as living spaces by the SHGs.


The committees have also been instrumental in assisting village councils to disseminate the advisories issued by the State Home Department to refrain from hunting or consuming any wild meat, especially wild boar, civets etc.


It was meanwhile informed that procurement of agricultural products is currently underway to facilitate sustainable market linkage for affected farmer communities despite the challenges of Bhandari block being located at the border with Assam. 


 “These community service activities and philanthropic work carried out by the SHGs were a pure display of altruism. Their services were voluntary and without any obligation or compulsion. Their selfless courage in putting their own lives on the line is really intriguing. Their gallant efforts for the betterment of mankind in itself has created a social vaccine,” said Chichanthung Shitri, Area coordinator (SISD) NSRLM, RD department, Bhandari Block, Wokha.


He further commended those involved and that their voluntary service for humanity, against all odds, and their efforts as responsible citizens in improving the quality of lives of the families, neighbourhood, the local community and the society at large is commendable.
