KOHIMA, JUNE 2 (DIPR): The first ‘State Advisory Committee’ meeting for the National Service Scheme (NSS) was held on June 2, under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister.
The Advisory Committee deliberated on the effective performance of the NSS in the State of Nagaland. The Chief Secretary while sharing his views expressed that the scale of funding of projects is too less and to tide over the meagerness of funding suggested pooling together the funds from other youth programmes by organising multi-disciplinary common programmes.
The Chief Minister termed the discussion as fruitful and hoped for the best towards proper funding to programmes under the NSS and urged upon the officials concern to promote the motto of the NSS further to “Work together, live together, survive together”, and assured to examine the proposal of the Department of Youth Resources & Sports for creation of State Liaison Officers cell for NSS.
At present, the NSS programmes are being implemented at 31 colleges, with a total strength of 8,745 enrolled volunteers, in the State of Nagaland.
The ‘State Advisory Committee’ meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary, Lalhuma, Principal Secretary RD, Toshi Aier, Special Secretary to Chief Minister and Secretary IPR, Viketol Sakhrie, Secretary Higher & Technical Education, Sentiyanger, Secretary Home, A Jami, Secretary Youth Resources & Sports, K T Sukhalu, Secretary Forest, Abeio Kire, officials from Youth Resources & Sports, Rural Development, Nagaland University, Higher & Technical Education, Medical, IPR, Kripa Foundation and from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.
The NSS programme was launched in the country on September 24 1969. The programme is a centrally sponsored scheme, meant for students of 10+2 and above, in a similar movement to the Nehru Yuva Kendra. The NSS targets the student-youths while NYK is for the non-student youths of the country. The common principle of both NSS and NYK is youth movement in the society. However, since the youths to be involved is the student community, NSS units are operational only in educational institutions and monitored by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports.
The motto of the NSS is “Not Me But You”, and is consonance with its motto, the aims of NSS are to make education more relevant to the present situations, to provide opportunities for students in planning and executing projects, to encourage students and non-students in working together, to develop leadership qualities, to emphasise on dignity of labor and to encourage students to participate in national developments. These aims are being implemented through the NSS’s regular activities by adopting villages and through special camping programmes in villages.
