The Nagaland State Transport (NST) has come under the public scanner, again. This time, it is over an alleged soliciting of cash from newly selected/appointed staff, who were recently recruited following a departmental recruitment process conducted during September to November 2025.

In September, last year, the Office of the General Manager, NST, published an advertisement inviting applications for filling 23 vacancies. The vacancies included 13 posts of conductors, 9 mechanic helpers and 1 Multi-Tasking Staff.

Some 3000-4000 aspirants applied for the posts, which, however, were advertised only after it was reported in the news. The aspirants were reportedly charged Rs 200 for the application form and an additional Rs 100 as examination fee.

Verbal interview was subsequently conducted at the NST GM’s office, and the result declared on November 27. In the result, only the roll numbers of the selected candidates were said to have appeared.

Now, a fresh allegation has surfaced, claiming that the GM’s office demanded and took Rs 10,000 from each of the candidates, who passed the recruitment tests. According to a local news channel, citing first-hand statements from some of the newly appointed candidates — currently undergoing training — they were allegedly told to bring the amount in cash alongwith their joining letters.

One of the selected Mechanic Helpers said that he received a call from the GM’s office asking him to bring original documents and Rs. 10,000. When he inquired about the purpose of the monetary demand, the caller allegedly replied that it was for paper works.

The cash were reportedly handed over in December 2025, when the candidates went to the GM’s office to submit their joining letters.

Another selected candidate said that he paid the cash on December 12.

A third recalled receiving a call from an unknown number. The caller claimed to be from the GM’s office. When he inquired about the cash demand, the caller allegedly told him it was for “kaam karne” (work). “I was compelled to comply with the demand since all the other selected candidates also paid,” he told on camera with face blurred for maintaining anonymity.

Of the 8-9 individuals (selected candidates) interviewed, all narrated more or less the same version— that the Rs 10,000 was for processing paperwork.

It was not revealed who made the call, and to whom the cash were handed over. The Office of the NST GM could not be reached for comment.
