Kohima, September 20 (MExN): Deputy Commissioner Kohima B Henok Buchem has urged students to recognise and seize opportunities rather than wait for perfect circumstances, while encouraging them to make the most of their university years through learning, participation and personal growth.
Buchem was speaking as the guest speaker at the 33rd Freshers’ Meet of the Nagaland University Students’ Union, Kohima Campus, held at AGOK Badze, Meriema, on September 18. The programme was held on the theme “KAIROS – The Perfect Moment Begins Now” and welcomed the new batch of students to the university.
Explaining “Kairos” as a right, opportune or decisive moment, Buchem encouraged the freshers to make use of the opportunities available to them during their university journey.
Sharing experiences from his student days and his journey into public service, the Deputy Commissioner highlighted perseverance, preparation, faith and the courage to overcome failure. He recalled his own success in the NPSC examination after an earlier unsuccessful attempt, describing the announcement of his name among the selected candidates as a deeply significant moment in his life.
Buchem encouraged the students to participate in debates, literary activities, competitions and other activities that help develop communication and critical-thinking skills. He also advised them to use technology and artificial intelligence responsibly, while cautioning against substance abuse, gambling, excessive social media use, misinformation and other distractions.
He said education carries a responsibility beyond obtaining a degree and called upon the students to uphold the reputation of Nagaland University through their character, conduct and achievements. He also encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to society and the state.
Buchem further urged senior students and the Students’ Union to extend kindness and guidance to freshers and foster a supportive university community.
The programme included an invocation by Meshao Shiu, welcome address by NUSU-KC president Putusunep Jamir, presentation by Information and Publicity Secretary Loviboli Aye, and a song by the Department of English.
Speech on behalf of the freshers was delivered by Kivini S Zhimomi of the Department of Psychology, while Dr Pucho Kiso offered the prayer of blessings. General Secretary Jomithung Ngullie delivered the vote of thanks and Minuka Pradhan delivered the benediction.
