Dimapur, May 8 (MExN): The Teaching Faculty in the School of Humanities and Education, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema, held a Colloquium on Rabindranath Tagore on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary on May 7, 2011, at the Conference hall of the Department of Education, NU, Kohima.
In his introductory remarks, Prof. Imtisungba, Dean of the School, spoke of the immense contribution Tagore has made towards the socio-cultural scenario of our country through his educative method of nurturing the all round personality development of the child. Dr. D. Kuolie, HoD, Tenyidie, spoke about his project of translating Tagore’s Gitanjali into Tenyidie, in his presentation “Exploring Tagore’s Gitanjali: A Pre-Translation Encounter for Tenyidie.” Dr. Buno Liegise, HoD, Education shared her thoughts on the emphasis Tagore gave to culture and mother tongue in his system of education. Dr. Jano L. Sekhose, Department of English, quizzed the members with puzzling and interesting questions from Tagor’s life and works. Tagore’s excelling as a creative writer in his mother tongue, Bengali, was noted by Lemtila, Department of English. His transcreations into English came later, she observed. Khotolie, Dept of Education, highlighted Tagore’s simple living and high thinking and how his educative system is based on practical learning activities that help students explore their innate talents. Dr. A.J. Sebastian sdb, HoD, English, briefed the august gathering on the relevance of Gitanjali today. The colloquium was an excellent opportunity for the teachers to explore the mind and art of Tagore.
