Dimapur, March 23 (MExN): Unhappy that the Nagaland government had been apathetic and ‘vague’ to the appeals and demands of the Nagaland University Teachers’ Association (NUTA), the teachers today rejected a “joint meeting” with the Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University. The NUTA wrote to TR Zeliang, chairperson of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Nagaland University over what was implied to be a proposal of the committee to the teachers to meet with the unpopular and scam-tainted VC Prof. K Kannan.
“The CEC, NUTA has taken a decision not to attend the said meeting at Lumami on the 23rd March 2011 and regret that we have to turn down the invitation,” the NUTA stated in the letter. The NUTA said it has met the highest authority, the Visitor of Nagaland University on March 9 March 2011 in Kohima and placed a series of demands before her. “Her Excellency has taken immediate cognizance and directives have been issued. The same has been placed before the MHRD. Therefore, the question of a joint sitting with the Vice Chancellor at this stage is infructuous and does not arise,” the NUTA said.
The teachers also said regular academic classes are on and “there is no agitation from the teaching community.” “However, as you are all well aware, total administrative failure, rampant corruption and destruction of the credibility of the university, including the latest examination related irregularities, has taken place during the tenure of the Vice Chancellor Prof. K Kannan,” the teachers said.
The NUTA reminded that it had sought the attention of the Government of Nagaland on numerous occasions to address the problems in Nagaland University. The CEC, NUTA delegation had met the Chief Minister of Nagaland himself in August 2009 and submitted a memorandum enumerating serious irregularities and corruption by Prof .K .Kannan, a copy of which was also sent to the Minister for Higher Education.
“Based on the NUTA memorandum to the Government, the NPF Inquiry Committee was set up and its report seriously indicts the Vice Chancellor. The CEC, NUTA executives met the Minister for Higher Education, twice in September 2009 seeking his attention and in October 2009, for early action on the NPF Inquiry Committee Report.
In the four hour meeting with the members of the sub-committee in 2010, the NUTA said, the delegation representing the three campuses has briefed the committee and submitted numerous documents procured by the NUTA under RTI, as proof and evidence of serious irregularities, ...
...violation of the Nagaland University Act, defamation of the state government to the MHRD and Ministry of Home Affairs and corruption by Prof. K. Kannan.
The teachers expressed their anguish: “Sir, it is indeed very unfortunate and discouraging that after all these attempts by the NUTA to draw and seek the attention of the state government take up to the problems in the university with the central government, the state government citing vague excuses, has failed to take action on their own NPF Inquiry Report on Nagaland University, along with numerous photographic evidence of bad constructions in Lumami headquarters, which indicts the Vice Chancellor Prof. K Kannan on all counts.”
Further, the association stated, numerous documentary evidence submitted to the committee has also evoked no positive response from the state government. Calling the government attitude ‘most unfortunate’, the organization questioned the ‘continuing undue patronage’ by ‘vested interests of Prof K Kannan’. Kannan is accused of ‘destroying’ the university and undermining the people of the state throughout his tenure.
