Dimapur, October 9 (MExN): The Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) has issued a clarification regarding what it described as “possible misinterpretations” of its earlier statement on the sale of Naga traditional attire.
In a press release issued by its President Y Imlinungla and Information Secretary Lesenli, the NWHD stated that it is “not against any local women or entrepreneurs engaged in selling Naga traditional attire to earn their daily livelihood, whether in markets or private shops.”
It emphasised that its concern lies solely in ensuring that such sales are conducted in ways that respect and preserve the originality, authenticity, and cultural value of Naga traditional attire and ornaments.
Reiterating its earlier stand, the NWHD said it strongly supports and encourages women to pursue entrepreneurship in traditional attire and textile crafts, provided these activities are carried out through proper channels that honour and uphold Naga cultural values.
At the same time, the Hoho reaffirmed its firm stance against the sale, display, or distribution of traditional attires, ornaments, or designs belonging to any Naga tribe by non-Nagas or traders without prior permission from the competent authority.
“Our traditional attire carries deep meanings and cultural significance passed down from our forefathers. When sold inappropriately or without understanding, these garments risk being misrepresented and misinterpreted,” the NWHD noted.
It further reminded that safeguarding and promoting Naga traditions should go hand in hand with empowering women in ways that are respectful, meaningful, and sustainable.
