Dimapur, February 22 (MExN): In further reports emerging from Wokha district of mob action before the state assembly election on Saturday, a death and two injuries have been reported from Pongitong village under 38 Wokha Town A/C.
Former VDB secretary Late Ajanbemo Humtsoe succumbed to dao injuries inflicted on his head early this morning following an altercation. The quarrel began at around midnight last in Pongitong when Ajanbemo, said to be an NPF supporter, along with some men, opened fire upon NCP supporters from the village having a late night meal. The firing led to the injury of two men, including a 70 year old GB.
Angered, the NCP supporters turned on Ajanbemo and his men, seized the weapon and assaulted him with a dao. Though police intervention made sure he was taken to a hospital at around 3 am, Ajanbemo succumbed to severe head injuries. A post mortem was done at the Wokha civil hospital and his body handed over at around 8 am. The injuries were mostly on the surface (head skin).
Following a complaint from Late Ajanbemo’s family, a case has been registered at the Wokha police station against the mob (that attacked Ajanbemo) under sections 302, 147, 148, 427, 440 and 120 (b) of the IPC. The case is now under investigation, informed SP of Wokha, Limasunep Jamir.
The two injured men are said to be stable though one had to be transferred to Kohima due to multiple bullet injuries. The 70 year old GB is in Wokha civil hospital with a single bullet lodged in his thigh. Wife of NCP candidate for 38 Wokha Town A/C, Dr. TM Lotha, is said to have been at the Wokha civil hospital at 2 am to show solidarity with the party’s injured supporters who were brought in at that time.
