One detained in Wokha on cash for vote charges

One man was apprehended on charges of cash-for-vote in Wokha town on February 21. He was allegedly found in the Wokha town area trying to induce voters with cash in favour of a candidate contesting from the 38 Wokha Assembly seat. 

When contacted by The Morung Express, the Wokha district administration and the police informed that the incident was reported from the Wokha town area at around 11:00 am, Tuesday. The official update from the Wokha police stated that the district Election officials detained the person based on a complaint/report from some youth, who allegedly caught him in the act. 

The incident occurred near the GHSS junction, Wokha town. Based on the complaint/report, the unnamed individual was detained by Election officials, who confiscated cash amounting to Rs 3,18,600  from his possession. While stating that investigation proceeding was on, it said that the police has submitted its report to the designated magistrate “for taking cognizance of the offence for further necessary action.”

Meanwhile, a press release from the 38 Wokha Assembly seat BJP unit, claimed that the detained individual was an agent of the NCP candidate from the same constituency. While stating that the alleged offence was reported by BJP workers, it appealed to Wokha district administration to take strict action against the accused person and his agents. It further appealed all supporters, irrespective of allegiance to abstain from violence.
