One killed in shootout with SF in Zunheboto

One person, suspected to be a cadre of the Nyemlang Konyak-led NSCN (K) was killed in a reported shootout with security forces personnel in Zunheboto on September 9. 

According to a press release from the Defence PRO, Kohima, the incident occurred in Bhaimo village. The release said that a column of soldiers were fired upon by “unknown insurgents” during a search operation.

In the retaliatory fire, “two cadres were apprehended, including one in injured condition, who was immediately evacuated to district hospital by the police, where he succumbed to his injuries, later,” it said. Their identities were not disclosed with the release stating that they belonged to the NSCN-K (NK).

One 9mm pistol, two magazines, four fired cartridges and 23 rounds of ammunition were recovered. 

It added that two local men apprehended at the site were later released to their parents in the presence of the police and Gaon Bura.

Meanwhile, the Zunheboto Police informed that the shootout occurred around 8:00 pm about 7-8 km from Zunheboto town, towards Aghunato. As per the police account, it was an operation conducted by the Assam Rifles following receipt of input about movement of armed cadres. 

The AR personnel came upon two persons, who reportedly ran on seeing the security personnel. One was apprehended and the other fired as he escaped. “He was asked to stop but fired back and got shot in the retaliatory fire,” the police said. 

He was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his wounds at around 2:20 am. 

The apprehended person was in the custody of the Zunheboto police. The police recovered spent 9mm and 7.62 calibre shells at the site of the shootout. 

The Zunheboto police added that an FIR in connection to the incident was received in the afternoon today and necessary legal procedure was on.
