One more succumbs to suspected adulterated liquor in Mokokchung

Mokokchung reported another suspected adulterated liquor fatality following the demise of a 30-year-old man at the Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital (IMDH) on September 29, morning.

Speaking to The Morung Express, IMDH Medical Superintendent Alemwapang Aier said the man, a resident of Alempang Ward in Mokokchung town, was admitted at 5:59 am and expired at around 7:25 am. 

The patient reportedly reached the hospital in an unconscious state after reportedly consuming alcohol and vomiting the previous night. The post-mortem was conducted on September 29, and the report is awaited to determine the cause of death. 

Aier further stated that six people had been admitted to IMDH so far in connection with consumption of suspected spurious-liquor, of who two died.

Mokokchung police had earlier confirmed the death of a 37-year-old member of the Yimkhiung community brought from Dibuia village. He was brought to the hospital and admitted at around 2:50 pm on September 26, before expiring at approximately 9:30 pm the same day.

At the time of admission, doctors stated that he had difficulty breathing, abdominal pain and general weakness, the records also noted a history of alcohol consumption three days prior to admission.

It was further informed that post-mortems had been conducted on the deceased and other suspected cases, with samples collected for examination at the Central Forensic Laboratory (CFL), Guwahati.

The Mokokchung Police had constituted a Special Investigation Team headed by the Additional Superintendent of Police Bunglang Chang to investigate the deaths. Police had also arrested 19 persons during district-wide raids and seized large quantities of liquor.

Following the deaths, the Mokokchung administration together with civil society organisations had resolved to adopt a “zero tolerance” against liquor. 

Confirmation of the latest death could not be independently verified from the Mokokchung police, which did not respond to multiple attempts to reach them.
