Commenting on the proposed Nagaland United Government with no opposition in the state assembly, National People’s Party (NPP) General Secretary, Finance, James Sangma said that democracy would be rendered “meaningless” in the absence of a vibrant opposition and that it would be “detrimental for the state.”

Sangma who also holds the ministerial portfolio of forests and environment, power, law, information and public relations and taxation in Meghalaya was addressing a press conference at Hotel Saramati in Dimapur on September 4 along with state NPP party leaders.

“The concept of democracy revolves around debate and when there is no opposition, it is very harmful for governance, administration and entire legislative process. It is good to have a constructive opposition,” Sangma said.

Sangma who addressed the press meet after the state NPP Executive Meeting informed that the meeting discussed about strengthening the party in the state.

On the two NPP MLAs who defected, Sangma said the case was pending in Supreme Court and exuded confidence that the party would win the case.

‘No solution is solution for the present govt’

When queried about the stand of the party on Naga Political Issue, State NPP President, Dr Andrew Ahoto Sema said that the party wanted solution at the earliest. However, he added that the state government should call a meeting of all tribal hohos and seriously deliberate on the issue. He also said that all the MLAs should step down to reflect a united voice and quest of the Naga people for an early solution.

“No solution is solution for the present government,” Dr Ahoto added.

He also supported 33% reservation for women but added ‘too much quota would be like spoon feeding them which would eventually spoil them.’
