‘Organic Nagaland: Current trends & Challenges’

18th ASAN general conference concludes

Medziphema, May 12 (MExN): The Agricultural Student’s Association of Nagaland (ASAN) conducted the 18th ASAN general conference in NU: SASRD, Medziphema campus under the theme ‘Organic Nagaland: Current trends and Challenges’ with Dr R. Elithung Lotha, Director of Horticulture as the guest speaker.  

The guest speaker, during the inaugural programme shared his concern overs the problems arising due to use of chemicals and fertilizers which has deteriorating effect on soil and the various health hazards that it poses.  

He stated that organic farming is in demand and “our State is organic by default. However, in order to be called an organic State, we must work towards a systematic organic type of farming.” He also touched on the area of marketing wherein the Agri graduates can serve as the link between the farmers and the market sector.  

Earlier, Asa Tep, President, ASAN while chairing the programme also stated that ASAN was the premiere organization for Naga agricultural students which was started in the year 1974 with the aim to encourage educational pursuance and to enhance technical competency of the agricultural Students of Nagaland.  

Welcome address was delivered by Chingsang Phom where he highlighted the total strength of the ASAN student members studying in various Agricultural Universities with the total amounting to 674 members in India.  

Dr LT Tongpang, Associate Professor, Department of Agronomy, NU: SASRD and advisor to ASAN exhorted the gathering by encouraging the students to work hard and find new opportunities of earning by making the most out of the natural resources and fertile land of our State.  

Kesosul Christopher Ltu, President, NSF remarked during the programme that the unemployment rate is increasing at an alarming rate, which necessitates the youth to start creating employment opportunities with their technical skills as well as to change the concept of searching employment to generate employment.  

The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by Loktimen Longchari, General Secretary, ASAN.
