Organic Rabbit farming training to boost sustainable meat production

ICAR Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute in collaboration with the KVK Dimapur launched a training session on organic rabbit farming on March 21.

DIMAPUR, MARCH 22 (MExN): The ICAR Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute (CSWRI), in collaboration with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Dimapur organized a training session on organic rabbit farming on March 21. The event, held under the North Eastern Hill (NEH) Programme, aimed to promote sustainable livestock farming in Nagaland, with a focus on organic rabbit farming as an alternative meat source for local farmers.

The training, attended by 30 farmers (27 female and 3 male) emphasized the potential benefits of organic rabbit farming, including its sustainability, high reproductive rate, efficient feed conversion ratio, and adaptability to small-scale farming. Organizers highlighted rabbit farming as a practical and resilient livestock option for farmers looking for alternative protein sources.

The session provided participants with resources to start their own rabbit farming operations. Each farmer received two rabbits (one male and one female), two rabbit cages, and 75 kg of feed to support the initial stages of their farming activities.

The training also highlighted the growing demand for rabbit meat in the region, noting its popularity due to its high-protein, low-cholesterol content. Rabbit meat is increasingly seen as a healthy food choice for health-conscious consumers.

Dr Arun Tomar, Director of ICAR CSWRI, and Dr Ranjeet Godara, NEH Nodal Officer, led the session, which was coordinated by Dr Ebibeni, Subject Matter Specialist in Animal Science at KVK Dimapur, and Dr Phool Kumari, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Dimapur. Dr Imlimenla Imchen, Chief Veterinary Officer of Chümoukedima district, also attended the event and expressed support for the initiative, acknowledging its potential to improve local food security and create economic opportunities for farmers.

Dr H Kalita, Head of the ICAR Research Complex for the NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, addressed the participants, stressing that rabbit farming is a viable option for farmers at all levels due to its lower financial investment compared to other livestock ventures. The initiative aims to empower farmers with innovative, sustainable farming techniques and contribute to the overall development of the region.
